Canada Overtakes and Overtaken stats and the best over-taker in this season of F1
Magnussen is on top of the list with 33 on-track overtakes.
Canada Overtakes:
During the Canadian Grand Prix, a wet weather Qualification led to a mixed starting grid, with Max on P1, Alonso P2 and Sainz P3. With Charles and Yuki starting from the back of the field due to grid-place penalty for exceeding the number of Power units, we were set for a thrilling feast of overtakes.
Charles Leclerc worked his magic with his out of position Ferrari, overtaking 11 cars in total to finish P5. Due to the nature of the circuit being a ‘street track’ with narrow layout, Charles was frustated after he couldn’t overtake a slower car of Ocon during his first stint. Most of the overtakes were done with the assistance of DRS, and with a low drag Alpine it meant the pace difference required to overtake on straight line is much higher.
With 3 VSC/SC conditions, most of the teams choose to pit to not lose valuable lap times, resulting in almost all the teams on a similar strategy.
After suffering damage following yet another first lap incident with Hamilton, Kevin had to pit early to change his front wing when the stewards noted it warranted a “Black and Orange Flag”, which ruined his entire race. K-Mag was overtaken 6 times. Haas once agained failed to score any points starting from P5, P6 on the grid.
Alonso engine issues and horrible race strategy led to him being overtaken 5 times.
2022 Overtakes by Circuit:
Formula1 returned to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve following a tumultuous Formula 1 calendar due to global pandemic, with no races in 2021 and 2020. However, the last time we raced here we had 30 overtakes and this year we had 36 overtakes out of which 22 were shown live.
On average, this year we had 39.78 overtakes to 37 overtakes last year, which is a improvement but not by much. (Notice we had 0 overtakes at Monaco in 2021)

2022 Season Overtakes:
Magnussen continues to lead both overtakes and getting overtaken metrics, doing the most work for Haas F1 Team. As Nyck De Vries, Mercedes Reserve driver mentioned “Lewis has been trying some quite experimental parts of the car, and there was a different floor solution on his car that didn’t work”, being out of position meant Hamilton had to work harder on track to crawl back up the order. Zhou had problems during the race starts, dropping him to the back of the field on the first lap, since the data doesn’t include first lap overtakes, Zhou had far lower number of overtaken than actual.
As one would expect Red Bull’s Perez was only overtaken twice this season, excluding team orders, and Ferrari’s Sainz overtaken 3 times, showing RedBull’s and Ferrari’s pace advantage to the rest of the pack.
Data: The official overtake data considers an overtakes as change in positions at the end of each lap to simplify the calculation, which misses most of the on track battles. The data used here is compiled by reddit users u/catchingisonething and u/Meaisk after going through the onboards, which means it includes actual on-track moves for positions and but also excludes first lap, safety car, pit lane, team orders, lapped cars, cars unlapping, cars off track due to issues/spins.
Excellent work, but why not first lap overtakes?
